Professor TAN Tieniu is Secretary of the CPC Nanjing University Committee. Prior to this position, he served as Deputy Director (Vice Minister) of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the PRC, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Deputy Secretary-General of CAS, Director-General of the CAS Institute of Automation (CASIA) and Director of the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition of CASIA.
He obtained his BSc degree in 1984 from Xi’an Jiaotong University and his MSc and PhD degree from Imperial College London in 1986 and 1989 respectively. After graduation from Imperial College, he joined The University of Reading, UK where he worked until he returned to China to join CASIA in 1998.
Professor Tan’s research interests include image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition and other related topics in artificial intelligence. He has authored or co-authored (co-edited) more than 10 monographs or books and has published more than 600 research papers in mainstream refereed journals and conferences. He holds more than 100 granted patents. He has received many awards for his scientific achievements, including several national scientific and technological awards and the most prestigious award from the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), the King-Sun Fu Prize. He is Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for the advancement of science in developing countries, International Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering and Corresponding Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. He is also Fellow of IEEE and IAPR.
He serves or once served on numerous editorial boards, conference committees and learned societies such as Machine Intelligence Research (current EiC), Acta Automatica Sinica (past EiC), IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, Pattern Recognition, Founding General Chair of International Conference on Biometrics (ICB2006), Founding General Chair of Asian Conference on Pattern Recognition (ACPR2011), Founding General Chair of Chinese Conference on Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision (PRCV2018), General Co-Chair of IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR2021), President of China Society of Image and Graphics, Vice President of Chinese Association of Artificial Intelligence, Vice President of IAPR and President of IEEE Biometrics Council.
